MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD: Director Daniel Luchetti's film is a vivid comedy focusing on the love-hate relationship of two brothers who come of age in a small Italian town during the 1960s and '70s. Their story is told in a manner that moves playfully and briskly. Unlike Louis Malle's great Lacombe Lucien, which laconically expresses how innocence is easily and cunningly gripped by fascism, Luchetti's characters already have dug their boots in the dirt by the time the film commences, with the younger brother sympathetic to the fascist cause while the rest of his family is emboldened by communism. (Italian with English subtitles) (NR, Italy/France, 108 mins.)

THEN SHE FOUND ME: Helen Hunt makes her directorial debut as well as stars in this smart, subtle and seriously funny dramedy about a NY schoolteacher. Her character experiences a mid-life crisis when in quick succession her husband leaves, her adoptive mother dies and her birth mother, an eccentric talk show host materializes and turns her life upside down as she begins a courtship with one of her student's recently divorced father. A noteworthy cast features Matthew Broderick as the boyishly, immature husband, Colin Firth as the smoldering new love interest, and Bette Midler as the birth mother seeking an immediate mother-daughter bond. Extremely funny overall, the comedy, however, always manages to remain rooted in sharply and warmly observed reality. (R, USA, 100 mins.)
